6 Clear Signs Your Lounge Needs Replacing

You've experienced a lot on your couch. You've laughed, cried, enjoyed meals and had a deep and meaningful conversation or two.

But the time will come when you'll start to question if you're getting what you need from your lounge anymore.

If your couch has seen better days, it may be time to update your upholstery. Here are six reasons why.

1

It Is More Sinking than Supportive

You know the look. Your couch may have started to sag in certain areas or when you sit down, you feel yourself slowly sinking – it's usually in your favourite spot, too.

Aside from mixing up where you're sitting, a sagging lounge means you need to either replace or rotate your cushions at the very least.

A sagging lounge is caused by worn-out cushions, old springs, or a bad frame and it is one of the first signs that your couch may be on the way out.

2

It Has Had A Long Life

How long should a couch last? On average, a typical sofa lasts between 7 and 15 years. It depends however on the quality and materials of the couch, and how you treat it.

Things like children and pets could shorten the lifespan of your couch and like everything, you get what you pay for. You should expect that a high-end couch will last longer than a more affordable option.

If you really like the sofa but want to eliminate the signs of wear and tear, reupholstering may be an option that will extend the lifetime of your lounge. You can find out more about reupholstering here, to see if it is the right option for you.

3

It Has Stubborn Stains and Smells

Companies such as Electrodry can treat a wide variety of stains on your lounge and give it a new lease on life.

Some stains such as urine can be problematic for couches. Especially, if your pet has repeatedly used the same area of the lounge. Urine is quickly absorbed into the fabric and if not correctly treated can be both unsightly and on the nose.

Chat to a professional upholstery cleaner and see what they can do – a good quality company will be able to treat most stains.

It Makes Creaking Noises

A creaking sofa is a major sign that it needs replacing. It means that the structure is starting to break down and it potentially won't be long until springs are popping loose.

To prevent this, sit gently onto your lounge (don't plop down at the end of the day, as tempting as it may be) and try to deter the children from jumping on the lounge where possible.

5

It No Longer Fits Your Space or Lifestyle

While we aren't promoting wastefulness, sometimes replacing a lounge is necessary when it just isn't working for you anymore.

You may have received or purchased a second-hand lounge as a student, when you first moved into your home or when you started renting, but now that you're maybe a young family or have progressed in your career, it is likely time for an upgrade.

Alternatively, you may have just downsized, and the lounge may be too big for your living space now.

When buying new, have a good think about what you're going to need from your couch 5, even 10 years down the track.

6

It Is No Longer Comfortable

You don't need to wait 7 years or until any of the previous reasons above apply to replace your lounge.

Maybe you loved your lounge when you first purchased it and now it doesn't feel as comfy as it should. Maybe your couch has had a lot of use over the years, and it feels like it is the right time to upgrade.

Regardless of your reasons, you need to be mindful of how you are getting rid of your old sofa.

How Do I Dispose of An Old Lounge?

You have a few options here, depending on the condition of your lounge.

Many local councils are now operating curbside pick-ups once or twice a year, where they will collect the bulk waste and ensure it is disposed of properly. Check your local council's website and try to time replacing your couch with a pick-up date.

If your council does not operate these, give them a call – they may be able to provide advice on how to best dispose of it.

Donate the furniture to a charity to help people in need. Give the organisation a call or check their website to see if lounges are accepted and in what condition.

Sell it on Gumtree or Facebook marketplace, assuming it is still in decent enough condition with no major stains.
